Sardine, Avocado & Watercress Rye Tartines

Why This Supports Menopause & Hormones

  • After menopause, cardiovascular risk rises significantly as oestrogen’s protective effects on lipid metabolism and endothelial function diminish.
  • Sardines provide EPA and DHA, which improve triglyceride levels and reduce inflammatory signalling in vascular tissue. They also provide calcium (particularly if the bones are included), supporting bone density at a time when bone turnover accelerates.
  • Avocado supplies monounsaturated fats that help improve LDL particle profile and reduce small dense LDL formation — a pattern more common after menopause.
  • Watercress is rich in vitamin K, which plays a key role in directing calcium into bone rather than allowing inappropriate deposition into arterial walls. This is particularly relevant as both bone loss and vascular calcification risk increase post-menopause.
  • Rye bread provides fibre that supports gut-mediated oestrogen metabolism and improves glycaemic control — helping to limit insulin-driven fat storage and lipid disturbances.
  • This is a simple dish that simultaneously supports heart health, bone integrity and metabolic stability.
